Norwegian title:

Abstract:

In this article, we will examine children’s rights and the UN Convention in a Norwegian context. The aims and structure of the Convention will be reviewed, and aspects of its monitoring and implementation in Norway will be described including Norway’s interaction with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. Special attention will be given to Article 12 of the Convention which ensures respect for the views of the child.

Children’s rights have had a long history in Norway, and, in the last decade, Norway’s interaction with the Committee on the Rights of the Child through its four reports to the Committee has played an important role in heightening awareness of children’s rights in the country, and as a catalyst for important reforms. Despite progress, improvements are still needed. These include important questions of children’s rights to participation, to be heard and to have their views taken seriously.

We expect continued improvements in the future as Norway strives to fulfill its obligations ac¬cording to the UN Convention under the watchful eyes of the Committee.
